Zikhroynes - Yiddish, Music and Memory

Hilda's current project involves an exploration of the interaction between the Yiddish language/Yiddish song and memory. It seems that hearing songs in Yiddish oftens triggers childhood - or other - memories. The songs seem to speak even to those who do not understand the Yiddish language. For some, there may even be some therapeutic value to hearing or singing such music.

Hilda would be interested to hear from anyone who remembers a Yiddish Song (even partially), or from non-Yiddish speakers who nevertheless seem to recall some Yiddish words (even if they don't always quite know what they mean). She would also like to hear from those who might like to meet with her and others to share their memories and discuss these ideas further at an interactive session (you would not need to sing at these sessions!). Just send an e-mail to hilda@chiribim.com and put 'Memory Project' in the subject box.

Masterclasses

Would you be interested in participating in a Yiddish Song Masterclass? Hilda is planning such classes before a small audience in Central London in early 2009. If you have some singing experience, know a Yiddish song or two, and would be interested in participating, please contact her by e-mail to hilda@chiribim.com and put 'Masterclasses' in the subject box.
